Thing 23. Final Thoughts

What were your favorite Things and discoveries?
The photo tools
How did you connect with others doing the 23 Things On a Stick?
Not very well
Were there any take-a-ways or unexpected outcomes from this program that surprised you?
I knew most of the material so I felt really cool :)

If we offered a 23 More Things On a Stick program like this in the future would you participate?
Yes
How would you describe your learning experience in one word or in one sentence, so we could use your words to promote 23 Things On a Stick learning activities to others?
The things I learned will help me to better connect with my Teens

Thing 22. What Did I Learn Today?

I will definately keep learning more about these web tools...the blogging thing i will try...but man oh man.

Thing 21. Beyond MySpace: Other Social Networks

Are you a member of any online communities?

Facebook & Myspace....also I am a member of Webjunction and Flixster (via facebook)

I just created a profile as requested for NING 23 things on a stick.
I added my photo to the Ning Profile and added the link to this blog.

http://www.ning.com/

I also just joined Fuzz Star the pet group!

Thing 20. Libraries and Social Networks

As stated in many of my earlier posts I am already a member of both face book and my space. I am a member of a few groups including the Bully Breeds Group I talk about in an earlier post. I also am a member of my college class group. I see many Teen Librarians using these sites with thier Teen Advisory Boards. We have discussed it, but we haven't gotten much further than talk. Again with the lack of home access in our small community this will hopefully gain popularity in the future. I don't know if our library as a whole will create an account anytime soon, but my TAB will be creating one this summer and advertising our summer reading program.

Thing 19. Podcasts

I have listened to a few podcasts online...and have discussed it as an option with my teens but many of them only have computer access at the library or school and only two of them have IPODS. So....it is a factor of living in rural Minnesota. Hopefully this will be a more feasible option in the future.

Thing 18. YouTube & Other Online Video

My favorite YOU TUBE video is actually a commercial that I love watching for jeeps where a bird, squirrl and wolf fall into the jeep and sing a song with the driver. It is super cute. LOVE IT! Also it there is a Video where a baby water buffalo escapes a lion and a crocodile. Super Crazy Video.

Minnesota Library 2.0

Okay...some of this is a littel redundant because I have already taken classes and read tons of info on the subject.

I have book marks for my teens with the researh project calculator on them and have discussed this tool with teens that come into our library. I obviously never had much luck with Timelines.....

Thing 15. Online Games and Libraries

I have been wanting to create a 2nd life account and now I have! Whoohoo! Thank you 23 Things!! Well, again I cannot putz around on it or I won't get this done.

As for 2nd life libraries...I have already heard tons about this (again i am a teen librarian soooo i have had to do tons of research on gaming) Which I love games anyway! There are libraries that have thier own land on 2nd life. I have an entire article about it if anyone is interested let me know and I will forward you the info.

Thing 14. LibraryThing

Okay I just joined this one too. Geez louise i feel like sucha groupie tonight! I am not even going to be able to remember all of the cool sites i have now!

I just made part of my library and I am going to add it into my blog as soon as I post.

Thing 13. Online Productivity Tools

I am begining to think I may not make it much longer. I am starting to pitter out.

Okay this one is easy for me because I already have an IGOOGLE account. Obviously I have a bit of a procrastination problem so any tools that are out there that help me with productivity I am all about it. I have a few widgets on my igoogle that help me save time. Including a calculator (I can never find mine when I need it)

Ta-da Lists is awesome. I hadn't ever heard of it before, but I am All About Lists and I will definately being using this resource. I just registerd for an account. I should have used this to keep track of my 23 things on a stick and completed them in a timely fashion instead of last minute!!

Remember the milk is awesome too!! Omigod. I am going to be so organized after Thing 13!!! I signed up for this account too! But I think i like this one better than Ta-Da. Yeah super awesome this is definately the one I am going to use.

I totally see how we can use Zamzar at the library. Since this program will convert one file type to another, if my teens can't open a file this can help us convert.

Thing 12. Do You Digg?

I was just watching a show on this...I can't remember who it was talking about it but anyway they were saying how much they liked it that they don't have to search through pages of crappy headlines. Oh yeah it was at PLA they guy at the Teen Tech work shop talked about how he liked that he didn't have to read through crap that real people decided what news is worth while.

I am not going to lie...I really don't like to watch or read the news. I know it is a nessesary evil. My husband has enough on I dont' think I would use any of these sites but I would definately recommend them to people I know who would benefit from them. I can also see how for reference questions these sites are definately useful.

I'd have to say stubble upon is my favorite.

#11 Bonus Material

Oh yeah...when retyping my last post I forgot to enter the info on the challenge part. I am obviously super tired now, but I don't see a whole of difference between dlicious and FURL but I think Pagekeeper is super awesome and will definatley bookmark that site as a resource.

#11

I am really starting to freaking hate my computer. I know I am tired and crabby and it is 4 a.m. but it is taking me 4 times as long because this thing keeps deleting my posts!!

Okay so yeah...delicious 23 things is added to my google reader rock on... the answers to the questions for the 2nd time around are yes I see the potential for these sites in the library. If we already have some sites marked in our own delicious page and have a link for patrons, we have already taken the work out of the searching. Oh yeah and I had also stated that i think it is neat because you may have a site you like but can only find junk when looking for something similar while someone else might have a simliar site bookmarked and you can use it without having to search through a bunch of junk websites.

Social Media: Del.icio.us, Tagging, & Digg, and More

I have registerd for Del.icio.us. I think it is super freaking cool. I hate it when I am at home and want a bookmark I have at work or vice versa. Also, just last month my computer crashed and when I got a new computer I obviously lost all of my bookmarks. This is really really awesome.

#10 Wikis

I know many teachers do not like Wikipedia. But I do. I think it is a self checking system. If someone eneters something totally bogus, somewhere in the world someone is going to catch it and fix it. I use a few Teen library Wikis including the Wiki for Teen Tech Week. Also..with out wikipedia i would have no idea what tons of answers to trivia are that I can't find and would have no idea what a Poetry Slam is or other trend or fad info you would never find in enclyopedia Britanica.

I edited the 23 Things on a stick Wiki. As you can see i am the one editing at 3:00 in the morning!!

#9 Cont.

Oh yeah and the other question I answered that was erased was....

I think if the Founding Fathers could see us now...the editing of the consitution for play would be the least of their worries.

#9 Collaboration

Omigod. I can totally tell it is 3:00 a.m. as I just deleted my post again. Ahhhh! Okay so recap again....

I don't think that either Zoho nor google documents is more difficult to use that the other. I used Zoho for my poll that I created and added it to my blog. See right hand column of my blog. 80's Movie poll. If you are reading this...which if you are...may I ask Why??...Then take my poll!!

#8 Share your creations

Grrr.......I have to save my drafts because this dang thing keeps erasing my posts before I post them!

Okay so quick recap since my long one was deleted.

I love the photo stuff I dded a Picture Trail cube to my Blog that totally rocks.

2nd....I created an acount on the lazy base for my Teen Book Club that I will get their opinions on at our next meeting

I am going to create an eFolio..but as I started i got totally sucked in and I need to finish this first.

Okay so I will totally recommend many of these sites 2 people I know and try to incorporate as much as I can with my teen group.

#7 Communication

Classes on email for Teens may be a quite a stretch...but for older patrons it would be a great "thing" to offer!!

Some of these "things" are things I have been exposed to constantly...i.e. instant messaging and text messaging. This is already how I communicate with some of my teens. I think reference would be great this way. Or as reminders for upcomming events.

Webconferenceing...i have attended so many I cannot even count. And I have also done many of the library webinars and webconferences.

Email can drive me crazy. So much junk to fliter through. And sometimes people rely to heavily on it.

My most recent webinar was on Online Homework Help in libraries.

I am a member of some facebook groups (not google...) including "Bully Breeds" which is a group for people with dogs that are breeds originating from bull dogs. My dog is a bull mastiff.

I am also already a member on MEEBO because some of my friends have AOL IM and I refulse to use AOL. You are just asking for viruses with AOL (in my opinion).

Finnally Twitter...I am going to go and sign up right now and check it out yo! Well...no one in my hotmail contacts is on Twitter so i am going to have to invite people. I will have to get back to you about how I like this one. However...if you look at the "everyone" option it is pretty crazy. Some people are talking in all sorts of different languages.

#6 Cont.

I am definately going to do the trading card thing for an event for my teen group.
